I'm the owner and sole veterinarian at my hospital. I just opened my practice in June 2018 after practicing as an associate veterinarian for the first 5 years after school. As both owner and practitioner, I wear many hats. I'm in charge of inventory (thank goodness for Vetcove!), human resources, marketing, and financials along with all the responsibilities of being a doctor.

Make sure you have all of your vendors connected! It's okay to set up an account with a distributor you've never used before. You'd be amazed at what new items you can find and the difference in prices between distributors. You can also find things available that are on backorder elsewhere.

When staining a cornea, tear off the dyed portion of the stain strip and place it into a 3cc slip tip syringe. Then put in 0.5ml of sterile eye wash into the syringe, replace the plunger, and gently mix. It's way easier to get the stain in the eye and creates less mess!

It's incredibly rewarding being able to help animals, especially since they can't verbally tell you anything. I also enjoy seeing their people happy when they're all better. The human-animal bond is a wonderful thing.
